About this event

Nokia Bell Labs is innovating more than ever before! They have many projects underway which Thierry will share, including their ambitious mission to put a cell tower on the moon! Thierry Klein will discuss this along with many of their other projects during this talk. Also, Bell Labs has recently turned 100 years old!

John Snee: Many people in the Trenton Makes network know that I absolutely love Bell Labs for their rich history of innovation within New Jersey. Overall, New Jersey was the very first innovation hub near a major city in America, which had plenty of open space. Inventors could come and free their minds in order to do some of the greatest work in the world at places like Bell Labs! I even recently went to visit the original Bell Labs research facility, now a massive co-working space called "Bell Works"!  [ Instagram Post ]

Bell Labs History

Bell Labs (Nokia Bell Labs) is one of the most influential research institutions in history, renowned for pioneering breakthroughs in telecommunications, computing, and technology. Founded in 1925 as the research and development arm of AT&T, Bell Labs has been responsible for numerous scientific and engineering advancements that shaped the modern world.

Notable achievements include the invention of the transistor (1947), which revolutionized electronics and computing, the development of information theory by Claude Shannon, the first communications satellite (Telstar), and major contributions to fiber optics, digital signal processing, and cellular technology. Bell Labs researchers have also played a key role in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and networking.

The institution has produced multiple Nobel Prize winners and continues to drive innovation under Nokia, focusing on future technologies such as 6G, AI, and advanced computing.

Bell Labs was a research and development center that produced many innovations, including the transistor, laser, and solar cell. Bell Labs was home to many notable discoveries and researchers, including Nobel Prize winners and Turing Award winners. Just a few of their notable discoveries include:

  • Cosmic background radiation
    • Discovered by Bell Labs researchers Penzias and Wilson
  • Transistors
    • Invented by John Bardeen, Walter H. Brattain, and William Shockley, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery in 1956
  • Photonic integrated circuit
    • A computer chip invented in 1989 that could handle 2,048 transactions simultaneously
