On May 21, 2024, the Council of the European Union announced that it had approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, aimed at harmonizing the rules on Artificial Intelligence with a "risk-based" approach: the greater the risk of causing damage to society, the more the rules will be strict. But what impact will the new European regulation have on startups operating for Smart Cities?

About this event

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into our daily lives is rapidly and seemingly unstoppable, promising numerous benefits to society. In the increasingly digital context of modern cities, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role and this integration is almost implicit. Smart Cities enable a flow of data on which artificial intelligence is not only used but also developed and trained. However, there are concerns about the unpredictability and uncontrollability of artificial intelligence, prompting calls for transparency and knowledge of the underlying machine learning algorithms.

The technology and advanced analytics at the heart of the Smart City concept promise a number of significant benefits, but also require careful regulation to address crucial issues such as ethics, data protection and security.

The European Union has recognized this need. After drafts, revisions, proposals and analyses, on May 21, 2024, the Council of the European Union announced that it had finally approved the world's first law on artificial intelligence, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, aimed at harmonizing the rules on artificial intelligence with a “risk-based” approach, meaning that the greater the risk of causing harm to society, the stricter the rules.

This law ensures that rights and freedoms will be at the heart of the development of this revolutionary technology, ensuring a balance between innovation and protection.

But what impact will the new European legislation have on new technologies for Smart cities?

The speakers will address these issues by focusing attention on the situation of the city of Rome, comparing it with other urban realities in an attempt to outline a picture of the impact that the AI Act could have on Smart Cities.
