The Oman Sustainability Hackathon (Tahadi Mustadam) is a two-day event designed to equip young Omanis with the knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The event is linked to the Jewel of Arabia expedition. The event is organized and will be delivered by the British Council in partnership with the German University of Technology in Oman.
Introduction
The Oman Sustainability Hackathon aspires to create positive pathways and opportunities for young people outside of formal learning. Through this initiative, we aim to empower young Omanis aged 18-23 to represent their communities on a local, regional, and national stage, contributing to trust-building, cohesion, and stability in their societies. Our hackathon is focused on science, technology, and business and will provide training to develop skills, voice, and networks, and provide opportunities to start businesses focused on sustainability.
Event Structure
Before the main hackathon event, an expert panel of industry and environmental experts will provide participants with insights and direction, offering an overview of sustainability challenges and opportunities, sharing case studies, and outlining successful solutions.
On the first day, participants will engage in activities and intensive learning sessions led by multidisciplinary mentors. These sessions will cover topics such as climate change, sustainability, the economic and business context, and opportunities related to securing essential resources like clean water, food, and energy. Participants will also learn about carbon-neutral buildings, circular economics, climate change mitigation, and how to design and present solutions.
On the second day, participants will apply their learning to develop solutions in the morning and they will pitch them to a jury in the afternoon. The winning team will present at the awards ceremony during Oman Sustainability Week, while runners-up will have exhibition space at the event. This structure ensures a motivational and impactful learning experience, fostering innovation and practical application.
Focus Areas
The hackathon will focus on science, technology, and business in the context of sustainability. Participants will explore the science of sustainability, learning about environmental principles and human impact. They will delve into technological opportunities, discovering innovative solutions like renewable energy and carbon capture. The business opportunities sessions will teach participants how to develop sustainable business models and attract funding. Aspects such as pitching for funding and influence through campaigns and social media will be key inputs.
