How Not To Measure Social Media Impact — The Paris Hilton Way

Measuring the impact of social media marketing is always a bit of an argument.  There’s the argument that branding is more important than actual clicks and that branding will cause more users to organically type in your URL directly – something that’s not easily measured.  On the other hand a lot of people want to know how many clicks they can expect if they have something they need to promote and send out a Tweet/make a Facebook post.

A recent, mildly hilarious example of this was The Next Web buying a tweet from Paris Hilton.  Yes, a Tweet from sweet Paris may or may not be a particularly targeted ad buy for an Internet conference in Amsterdam, but an experiment is an experiment.  Paris appears to have 6.6 million Twitter followers. Google Kicks Off April Fools Season With 8-Bit Version Of Google Maps

In the most telling sign that Google has way too much money, they have released an 8-bit version of Google Maps for the original Nintendo just in time for April Fools’ day. You can try it out here. Google went to a lot of trouble with this inserting landmarks in major cities throughout the map. If Richard Branson Hasn’t Reached Success We’re All Screwed

Sometimes I wonder what motivates guys like Max Levchin, Sean Parker, or Marc Andreessen to keep it going again and again. Once success is achieved so many just fall by the wayside to live on the beach the rest of their life. Now we truly know what motivates the best. Richard Branson is one of the greatest entrepreneurs of his generation. But as Kobe Bryant explains though he’s already living “Success at success” he’s yet to achieve “Success at success at success”. Hold your breath this is deep stuff.

Get Inspired: Worf (Star Trek) Would Have Made A Great Entrepreneur

Tell me how many times you’ve been rejected and I’ll tell you whether or not you’re going to survive the startup gauntlet. Colonel Sanders is said to have been rejected over 1,000 times over 9-years as he perfected his fried chicken recipe that would go on the feed and fatten thousands of Americans with the KFC franchise.

As the Chief of Security on the USS Enterprise-D, Worf takes abuse from what seems like every angle possible. He gets talked down to by the captain, Klingons, children, a pregnant woman, even Geordi La Forge (WTF Geordi?!). All the while he maintains his cool calm demeanor and carries on with what he needs to do. Below is a compilation of his greatest moments of trial and it’s a good reminder for entrepreneurs feeling beaten down. In fairness you could also say that he would have made a great yes-man at a big company, but that kind of ruins my blog post. Dang.
