Startup Grind Live With Jason Putorti

Jason and that Derek guy.

It’s nearing 7pm and we’re in Mountain View for Startup Grind live.  Tonight Derek will be talking to Jason Putorti, the Co-Founder of Votizen and early Mint.com Designer.  We’ll be liveblogging shortly, so get ready to start hitting refresh.

Aaaaaaand here we go…

It’s Derek’s third anniversary of leaving EA and doing the Grind.

Jason was one of the first 5 employees of Mint.  Now he’s a  Co-Founder of Votizen.

Jason: Grew up in upstate New York.  Went to school at Pitt.  BS in Computer Science and Math.  He took a design class and then ended up going to Parson’s for about 3 months.  His first gig was doing college books.  Moved into a tech meets design agency (mid-’00s).  Decided the services business didn’t scale well, so he came out to California.  Joined Mint. What Does San Diego Offer The Startup Scene? A Lot More Than Great Waves.

Startup Grind San Diego is proud to announce its first event at the EvoNexus incubator in downtown San Diego on Wednesday, June 20th. Entrepreneurs from all industries are invited to come and hear from Greg Horowitt, venture capitalist, serial entrepreneur, global innovation policy adviser and author of The Rainforest: The Secret to Building the Next Silicon Valley. Make sure to join our SD community here and reserve your tickets for our inaugural event

San Diego has long been one of the action sports capitals of the world, a breeding ground for talented athletes like pro skateboarder Tony Hawk, who went from local hero to global icon, boasting 16 video games that carry his name and an estimated net worth of $120 million, among various other accomplishments. It is a city that operates on the ‘work hard, play hard’ philosophy – one where it is not uncommon to find surfboards lying around the office. Perhaps that has something to do with the reaction I got from my parents when I told them we were opening the San Diego chapter of Startup Grind they assumed it was a skate company. Read more

Patrick Collison Founder @Stripe, Live At Startup Grind (VIDEO)

It’s been a whilwind couple of days. We had Michael Tchong speak last night at our inagural Marin event, and we had Patrick Collison the night before that in Palo Alto. Patrick is CEO of one of the most interesting startups in Silicon Valley. He’s taken a decade old problem and completely turned it upside down on it’s head.

He and his brother have taken an idea and in two years built a 20+ person company valued at well over $100MM. Patrick is a fascinating person. At only 23-years old he’s already won a national science award (in Ireland), sold a company for $5MM, and now he’s onto his next massive hit set to disrupt the entire payments industry. Remember the name Stripe, because you’ll be hearing a lot about it.

Startup Grind Hosts Stripe Founder Patrick Collison Live (4/25)

There aren’t a lot of startups that I hear about as frequently as Stripe. It’s not from the press. It’s from developers. Almost every new engineer I talk to building a site that aims to make money has implemented Stripe’s API. Simply put Stripe is payments for developers. They make it easy for developers to start accepting credit cards on their website. I wrote a feature about the founders and brother combo Patrick and John a few weeks ago. Patrick has agreed to grace the Startup Grind stage in Palo Alto on April 25.

In 2005 at the age of 16, Patrick Collison was the recipient of the 41st Young Scientist of the Year for his work with Lisp. Before Patrick’s last year of High School he left early to attend MIT. During his first quarter of freshman year, Patrick founded Auctomatic and joined Y Combinator. Its path would not last long. At the age of 19 and ten months after incorporating, the company was bought by Live Current Media for $5MM. In early 2010 John and Patrick began working on Stripe together. Only a few days after he agreed to speak it was announced that they raised $18MM at a $100MM valuation. Excited to have him tell his story first at Startup Grind. Reserve your ticket today.

500 Cookies For 500 Startups For Hacker Dojo

***This post was written by Vi Tran and first appeared on her blog***

So Startup Grind is definitely one of my favorite tech events. It’s always interesting and entertaining and there’s a certain personal aspect to it that I really enjoy. I’ve helped out at Startup Grind before but haven’t attended any of the events in a while, until my friend Anne recently offered me an invite to go see Greg Tseng speak. He was a client of hers and she wanted to attend and show support. Read more
