A Night In LA With Mark Suster

sgmsusterWednesday night at Cross Campus, Startup Grind welcomed Mark Suster to his home turf of Los Angeles for a reprisal of his role as an awesome speaker at Startup Grind Conference. It was our most successful LA event ever, with 120 people in attendance filling up Cross Campus to standing room only. In this wrap-up you’ll read about what happened, what our members thought, where you can get THE VIDEO(at the bottom), and some exciting announcements.

Mark shared the story of his formative years as a Economics guy who wanted to become a Tech guy, who wanted to become a General Partner. The epic spanned across the United States, France, and back again to Los Angeles where Mark has made his ‘mark’ on our communtiy forever. It was all possible because whatever Mark wanted to be, that’s what he told people he was, and then he did what that guy would do so that others could see him that way. It’s called making your own Brand. Everyone will want to give you a simple brand, Mark illustrated, so brand yourself first to get where you want to go. Speckled with dozens of hilarious and insightful stories spanning numerous topics, it was a valuable and delightfully intimate evening.

I can say it was great until my fingers turn blue from CTRL+V-ing, but what really matters is how you, the entrepreneurs we exist to help, felt being there. I’ll yield the floor to our amazing community, who made my night the highlight of the month. Thank you guys and my 117 other new friends for being awesome.

“StartupGrind’s fireside chat with Mark Suster was a perfect blend of funny and informative. It was an excellent learning opportunity for a younger VC like myself to hear from such a prolific investor and blogger as Suster in a casual and candid manner. Derek led the conversation with a perfect tone to keep it lighthearted and fun, but also highly informative. StartupGrind kicks ass.” -Arteen Arabshahi, Senior Analyst from Karlin Ventures

“Last night was my first Startup Grind event and I was mightily impressed.  Mark Suster was a fantastic interviewee, as guided by the charming and thoughtful Derek… I’m happy to call myself a new Grinder. Thanks for last night and in advance for future events.” -Marc Pariser, founder

“It was easy to make new friends. Derek and Mark had a really informative chat, and one that can’t fail to impact the budding entrepreneur, and it was amazing that Mark took the time to speak with everyone after the event. I would highly recommend attending to all of my friends and clients!” – Mike Molony, GQR Global Markets (Rails recruiting)

Huge thank you to our local sponsor Gunderson Dettmer, a 160-lawyer firm as international as Startup Grind that specializes in Startups.

Copious pizza was enjoyed by all thanks to Bryan Lemster of Halcyon Innovation, who are killer at software for hire (sites, apps, and social media for hire).

A big shout-out to grinder Marcus Floyd of PhantEye for stepping up to help us record, you were a true pro.

And thanks to @kiasuchick for tweeting the pic at the top! :)

Video of the event, where you can learn the other 6 career-altering insights Mark shared, will be up on our SG Youtube channel shortly. The night also marked our first time working with TV4Startups, who recorded the event from multiple angles with great audio- a level of quality we look forward to at many events to come with our new partnership.
